Where To Go And What To Do In Brisbane...For The Environment

Written by: Anthea Fox and Phoebe Lau

Looking for a guilt-free shopping hit or an environmentally friendly experience that will make you feel good for all the right reasons? Brisbane is catching on to the luxury eco-trend and you don't have to look too hard to find it. Here's our round up of the best places to go in Brisbane and a few worth the trip further a field.

Fundies

It may look a little too earthy to be sitting in the middle of the vibrant Paddington boutique scene, but if you’re looking for a real organic food experience, you might have to be prepared to get a bit of mud on your clothes. The Fundamental Food Store is one of the best organic cafes in Brisbane and definitely worth a look for a great breakfast out, if scrambled tofu is your idea of breakfast! On a sweeter note, the fresh fruit juices and smoothies also make a nice shopping break.

Address: 219 Given Terrace, Paddington

Mondo

Luxury organic dining is a reality at West End’s Mondo Organics. For a night out with a feel good side, Mondo is not to be missed. The menu stresses the benefits of organic food and it tastes so good you don’t need to be told. If just sitting back and enjoying isn’t enough, try a cooking class. Courses include the wheat-free, dairy-free class, vegetarian only, or for the traditionalists, French Classics.
Address: 166 Hardgrave Road, West End

Biome

This is what the eco-trend is all about. Clean cut, vibrant, experimental and fun. Take a look at all the little things you have around your homes - sheets, coffee, paper, Biome wants to convert them all to green. Don’t be scared, it won’t involve any paint! With a new store just opened in the CBD, why not drop in and try the organic cosmetics range? An eco-friendly moisturizer is bound to make your skin glow in the knowledge that you’ve done something for the environment. Our favourite pick: the Stapleless Stapler – save the environment one little piece of metal at a time!
Address: 2 Latrobe Terrace, Paddington
or
215 Adelaide Street, CBD

Wray Organic

This new organic food shop and café is hard to miss, driving along Kelvin Grove Road. It’s a little cluttered inside but has a charming atmosphere. You can pick up any imaginable organic food and a few different soaps and shampoos as well. But most importantly, the organic café is very enticing and always hard to resist.

Adornments

If buying new trinkets isn’t your cup of tea, try going vintage! Adornments on Paddington provide a wide range of beautiful vintage pieces, whether it’s clothing, shoes, handbags or décor. Decorated in the style of a Victoriana wardrobe, the deliberate merchandising makes treasure hunting all the more interesting.

Food Markets

This is the place to be if you want to wake up to fresh air and fresh food. It's bound to give you a good start to your day! There are various food markets in Brisbane throughout the week - if you want to pick up a bunch of cheap and delicious fresh fruit and veggies before work, check out the Brisbane Produce Market. The market opens to the public at 9am to 11am every Wednesday to Friday with a small entry fee of $2. If going on a weekday is too hectic for you, try going to some the weekend ones. The Powerhouse Farmer's Market and The Green Flea Community Market are our favorites. Both of these open at 6am every Saturday. Lyola Hidden in the trees of Maleny, we have found the most spectacular places to retreat from the daily grind. Choose between Hide, a relaxingly earthy wood-filled pavilion or Seek, a rejuvenating space, situated high up in the trees – just like your childhood treehouse. Quaint, classic and quintessentially eco, although Seek is not for those afraid of heights!
