We all want flawless, radiant skin but the truth is, beautiful skin needs love and care. Here at Frock Paper Scissors we are sick of trial and error routines and have decided to approach Atrium beauty therapist Carolyn Cunneen to find a beauty routine best for you.
According to Cunneen, knowing your skin type is absolutely necessary for choosing the right skin care routine. Generally there are five basic skin types: normal, dry, oily, combination and sensitive. “Once you understand this you can pick the right ingredients, such as calamine for sensitive skin,” she says.
Some ingredient lists remain a little ominous so it’s important to read the back of the package as some can affect your skin in different ways. Cunneen believes that sodium laureth sulfate should be avoided. “It’s a harsh chemical that makes products foam and lather. It is used to strip concrete, so it will make your skin more sensitive and cause damage to the outside acid mantel,” she says.
Every skin type should cleanse every night to get the harsh pollution and dirt off your skin. Moisturising at night is particularly important says Cunneen. “When you are sleeping your skin absorbs most of the product best when your whole body is in its resting mode.”
Exfoliating is also essential for all skin types. This should be done once to twice a week to remove those dry, dead skin cells on the top.
Individually, additional ingredients and routine elements can be applied.
Tips for normal skin:
- Use an oil-based moisturiser to help protect your skin from moisture loss
- Apply sunscreen each day to protect your skin from sun damage
- Apply a hydrating mask once a week to keep your skin healthy
Tips for dry skin;
- Use a milky moisturiser to increase the water content of the outer layers of skin as it will give your skin a soft and hydrated look
- Include a toner daily to effectively remove impurities and refine pores
- Double cleanse with a milky, cream-based cleanser, always apply gently
Tips for oily skin:
- Use a toner at night time to remove deep seated dirt in the skin
- Apply a very light oil free moisturiser by dabbing and massaging lightly in an upward motion at lease twice a day
- Use a face mask once or twice a week to clear out your pores
Combination skin:
- Provide a balance of different attention to the needs of the dry and oily patches
- Find the right ingredients to balance out your PH
- Use 100 percent natural products
Sensitive Skin
- Use a deep cleansing mask two or three times a week
- Wash your face twice a day using a natural balanced cleanser
- Tone your skin nightly to calm and hydrate your skin
