La Boite Theatre welcomes Gyton Grantley who acts in Bradon Cowell’s play Ruben Guthrie.
Playing Ruben is Gyton Grantley who has returned to the stage after several years and is best known for his Logie Award winning portrayal of Carl Williams in Underbelly.
The play depicts Ruben’s journey through alcoholism and is set like an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting with Ruben re-enacting the pivotal moments of his life struggling with alcohol.
David Berthold Artistic Director of La Boite said the theatre has been hungering for quality comedians for a while.
He believes now Mr Grantley, who he called a brilliant comedian, has come to La Boite this hunger is satisfied.
Elisa Oatley Communication Manager at La Boite agreed noting there’s lots of “hype” about the production.
“It’s really good to have Gryton Grantley perform in the show,” said Ms Oatley.
Comments from audience members attending the Friday 14th October session spoke of the play as moving, realistic and an authentic struggle.
“I think he’s (Grantley) terrific, made for the role, really. I think he has exactly the right blend of charm, intelligence and bravery,” said Mr Berthold.
Mr Berthold named Ruben Guthrie as “one of the best recently written Australian plays.”
Age appropriateness should be considered when viewing this play as it includes constant profanities, religious slurs and an intimate scene.
Ruben Guthrie is playing at La Boite from the 8th of October to the 12th of November. An adult ticket is $48. Grab tickets online at http://www.laboite.com.au
