Want a simple and fun way to update your summer wardrobe? Awaken that creative streak and make your own individual hoodie with some old or new towels.
The pattern is to scale; just draw up a grid (10 x 10 cm squares) on a large sheet of cardboard and draw the pattern pieces according to where they are in relation to the grid.
Before you cut anything, lay out the pattern and decide where you want to put the pieces. Think about what part of the towels pattern you want to be on the back or hood, making sure you have enough towel.
What you’ll need
* 2 beach or bath towels (we used two 76 x 120 cm)
* sewing machine (or use a needle and thread if you have the time and patience)
* pins
* scissors
* ruler
* pencil
* cardboard
Instructions
1. Lay out the towels and decide where the pattern pieces will go, then carefully cut around the pieces. Tip: To keep the pattern pieces from moving out of position, either pin them or weigh them down with something heavy. Alternatively you could use some chalk to trace around the pieces ensuring you mark where all the notches are.
2. Sew the shoulder seams of the back and front pieces with the right sides together.
3. Sew the sleeves into the main part of the hoodie, with the right sides of the fabric together. Make sure you keep the notches lined up so the sleeve doesn’t come up short on the other end.
4. With the right sides together fold the sleeve piece on itself. The hoodie will now start to take shape. Sew the sleeve edges together and all the way down the side seams.
5. Get the two hood pieces and lay them on top of each other, right sides together. Sew around the curved edge.
6. Almost finished! Sew the hood onto the neckline. With the right sides together carefully match up the hood edge with the neckline, if needed pin in place.
7. If you want to leave the edges of the front opening raw/frayed then you’re finished. Otherwise, fold the towel edges 1 cm over and sew down.
8. Cut off any threads then sit back, pat yourself on the back and enjoy your handiwork.
