The Bare Essentials: Investment Make-up Shopping

By Lauren Agius

Lauren Agius gets the low-down on what every shopper should know before venturing into the cosmetics department.

Mascara
Waterproof mascara may protect you from panda eyes, but chances are it’s actually causing you problematic eye conditions. Try lash tinting instead — and if you must coat your lashes, sweep them with products containing ingredients such as bees wax, lanolin and silk proteins.

Industry faves: L’Oréal, Rimmel, Dior.

Bronzer and Powder
Getting a just-got-back-from-Bali glow is cheap and easy – as long as your bronzing powder is applied correctly. For a round-shaped face: apply bronzer to the temples to make it look narrower. For a long-shaped face: apply to the chin and forehead to make face look rounder.

Industry faves: Yves Saint Laurent.

Nail Polish
Preserve your colour by using less polish and applying a top coat. Keep your claws looking classy by using a base coat to protect nails and try to use lighter colours on toes to stop discolouring.

Industry faves: China glaze and O.P.I.

Eyeliner
The best way to define your peepers is to use eyeliner wax crayons for beneath the lashes and cake eyeliners just above the top lashes.

Industry faves: Napoleon and Rimmel.
