Red Lipstick

By Anna Havers

Red lipstick. What is it about this phenomenon that never fails to indicate glamour, romance and style?

Is it the association with old Hollywood glamour icons like Marilyn Monroe? Or the fact that red lipstick never goes out of fashion? Or maybe it’s that in Western society, the colour red is often associated with power, confidence, love and danger; all of which are to some extent, desirable.

Historically, red lipstick has been linked to power and feminism. Popular culture theorists have dubbed the increasing number of sexy, powerful women as ‘lipstick feminists’. Gone are the days when women feel in order to be powerful, they must present themselves in a masculine way.

Lipstick feminism is all about being a woman, in every definition of the word. This eccentric group of women believe that the sexuality conveyed through wearing high heels and red lipstick is empowering.

There’s something about women who wear red lipstick, they just ooze confidence. But what came first, the red lipstick or the confidence? Some say the red lipstick, as it adds an element of glamour and edge to every woman – who wouldn’t be confident when they look so fabulous?

Whereas, others are partial to the theory that confidence is the key to pulling anything off; particularly something as bold as red lipstick. Either way, it’s a win-win scenario.

For those of you who have not yet found the confidence to wear red, just do it; red lipstick will be your ticket to ride. If you already hold the title of ‘most exuberant’, let your personality shine through your lips.
