The last book I read was… 1984 by George Orwell. To unwind after a hard day’s work I like to… have a glass of wine. If I could be a superhero I would be… Wonder Woman, because she’s a babe and she can wear hot pants.
1. When did you first start to become interested in fashion?
I’ve always been interested in clothing and the way people dress, but my interest in “fashion” fashion started when I left school. I started working at a little boutique and that sparked my interest in actual fashion, as well as, designer collections.
2. What made you want to study fashion at QUT?
It was working in that boutique that made me want to study fashion. Originally, I planned to enter the business side of fashion, but after I started to do a business degree, the double degree with Fashion was offered. I applied and I got in, and I’ve never looked back.
3. Can you describe your personal style?
I think my style leans more towards tailored basics. Although sometimes I’ll throw in something a bit more exciting like some colour, depending on my mood.
4. Where do you get your inspiration from for your designs?
For my graduate collection, I got it from a range of places. I start with a concept, and then the trends and things around at the time influences me as well. As my graduate collection is a bit more wearable, it did take on a lot of the trends that are currently around. But the core concept of my collection, called ‘Hybrid’, is based on the idea of plants, and nature, and humans melding together. Hybrid celebrates the contrast between the complexity of nature and the simplicity of its beauty. So it started off as a really harsh muted sort of thing, but then it really softened up and now it’s really tactile. I’m using a lot of different fabrics like leather and knit, and a lot of drape to portray that.
