Angela Leggett

Not many people know… when I was in kindergarten a girl tried to steal my favourite Thomas the Tank Engine handbag, so I bit her to get it back.  My biggest indulgence in life is… sleep, at the moment. My favourite fruit is… green apples.

1. Where are you originally from?

I grew up in Brisbane, but I was born in Tasmania.

2. What made you want to study fashion at QUT?

I’m doing the double degree, and it’s the only place in the southern hemisphere where you can do that. I applied to another university in Melbourne, but comparatively, their facilities were a bit old and derelict looking, and there were a lot more students.

3. Where do you get your inspiration from for your designs?

Shapes, generally. Often applying two-dimensional shapes, or shapes of objects that are not associated with fashion to the body and manipulating them.

4. What’s your collection about?

My graduate collection is called ‘Saves Nine’, as in ‘a stich in time saves nine’. I’m really interested in sustainable practices and fibres, so I’m using all organic cotton and wool, and everything is undyed. ‘Saves Nine’ is about bringing value to a garment without using colour, so to do this I’m focusing on how each garment is finished, as well as using texture throughout the collection. I’m not going to boycott colour forever, but there’s a lot of issues surrounding dying techniques, so I wanted to explore the different ways of making a garment.

5. Where can we find your pieces, are they stocked anywhere?

I have a diffusion line of my graduate collection called ‘Bower’, in The Fleet Store (a pop-up store previously at Wintergarden for three months). So basically they’re similar designs, but it’s at a cheaper price so the finishes are different.
