Brett Bevege

Brett Bevege

My mother always told me… clean your room. Right now I’m listening to… Madonna! I listen to Into the Groove heaps as I want that to be my runway song. I’m trying to get a feel for it. My nickname is… CREVU. When you type Brett into predictive text, it becomes Crevu. My biggest indulgence in life is… savoury junk food.

1. Are you originally from Brisbane?

No, I’m from Maleny on the Sunshine Coast. I finished school in 2005, and then moved here the next year with friends.

2. Have you always been interested in fashion?

My whole life, I was always interested in art, fashion and film. But I decided I wanted to choose one of those paths to go down, and I chose fashion.

3. Can you describe your personal style?

It’s very casual, like jeans and a t shirt. A girl in my class gave me the shirt I’m wearing. It’s actually a women’s shirt. She was wearing it last week and I said, “You’re giving me that shirt”. And she brought it for me today.

4. What inspires you creatively?

I’m always listening to music, reading books, and watching films. So most of my inspiration comes from general popular culture, and from that I select one part to focus on.

5. What’s your collection about?

The collection is called ‘The Wanderer’. We had to come up with a concept, and I went home and looked around my room. There was a suitcase from my trip to America, and all this shopping from travelling on the floor, so I decided, “okay, TRAVEL!”

One of the key elements I wanted to focus on was that the pieces were crease-free so they’d be travel friendly. I used stretch jersey fabric, lycra, and a board shorts type fabric, as these fabrics don’t crease. I’ve also included prints in my work, which are inspired by photographer Ryan McGinley. He took a series of cave photos on a road trip across America, which is where I got the colour and texture ideas from. Finally, each of the pieces are either oversized or tight fitted, with no zips or anything fussy. It’s very clean, practical and straightforward.
