Jacinta Dyer’s graduate collection evolved from the notion of binary opposition and her experiences associated with ‘The Notion.’ Her collection explores the tensions felt between such oppositions as the left and right functions of the brain, east versus west, power and fragility, and tradition and advancement; all of which find form within Jacinta’s hybrid designs. There are some paradoxes in her collection, which are set in deliberate conflict between one another, while other paradoxes have been harmonized using neutral and universal design elements. Jacinta believes that the heightened genre distinctions found in fashion marginalise the status of garments, which prevents new paradigms for fashion-forward contexts. This collection’s garment and fabric mix was prompted by a desire to question such limited categorical ‘taggings.’ Instead the collection seeks to consider a larger and unbounded domain for sartorial expression.
Jacinta seeks to blur the cultural origins of her garments and integrate alternative references and methodologies in its place. She uses experimental techniques of patternmaking and cutting to eliminate cloth wastage in an attempt to inject Eastern cutting methods into Western garments. Side seams are removed or have a shifted axis on the body. Many designs are created from squares or whole lengths of fabric but still achieve the Western ideal of a body-conscious fit. Panelling creates form and decoration, hovering between futurist geometrics and ancient patchwork craft. Draping is inserted unexpectedly and focus is given to the instinctual need to wrap the body in cloth. The collection eschews the non-colours, black and white, as well as pure primaries, opting instead for pungent combinations comprised from the magenta–cyan–chartreuse colour system. Symbolic colour groupings and prints transform familiar stripes and traditional herringbone for the unfamiliar future.
Jacinta will graduate in 2008, but already has experience with styling fashion shows and photo shoots. Prior to this degree she undertook a Bachelor of Laws specialising in Intellectual Property, and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Art History. In 2007, she studied Fashion Design and Textiles at the Amsterdam Institute of Fashion and has also freelanced small commissioned fashion ranges.
